Use the following schedule planer to find European rail connections - inside the countries and crossing borders.
Some trains will need a supplement: http://www.interrail.net/english/supplements.php
In most cases you can avoid the supplements.
Play with the options:
Products
Whole journey
without HST/trains with surcharge (it is at the left bottom of the website)
Always have a look at the country topics of our forum where city-to-city connections are listed which avoid supplements.
As well you will find a lot of detailed information concerning night trains: interrail-countries-f54.html
The train schedules on the linked website are always up to date.
Schedules are available up to 3 months in advance.
At the second weekend of December and at the end of May there are updates of the train schedules.
If you want to plan more than 3 months in advance, use the date of tomorrow to get some information and an impression of the travel times - as train schedules won't change a lot during the year.
