idiots guide to interrail

Postby irish-derry » 15.07.2009 - 19:46

hello everyone

planning on doing abit of travelling early 2010 and was wondering how this interrail works ? my basic plan is
to leave from ireand and travel around euope for 1 month as cheaply as possible then from europe head to thailand and stay there for a month then head onto australia.

1.do i have to get flight from ireland to a european city of MY choice and start the interrail from there ?

2. when i start the interrail for e.g-- hamburg do i have to have everything planned for the full month for example the exact date's im planning to leave hamburg and go to another city and so forth or can i go from e.g-- hamburg to munich and decide myself how many days i wanna stay in munich for then just leave when i want ??

3. how much is it for my train pass for the month ?

4.can i just arrive at train staion and decide what city i want to head to next or will i have to have it picked in advance ?

hopefully these questions aint too stupid and use guys can help me out.

thanks in advance

1) You dont have to, but it would probably make sense. You can start anywhere you like but the ticket is not valid in your country of residence (Ireland)

2) You dont have to plan anything if you dont want to - thats the beauty of the ticket, you can go where you want, when you want

3) At the moment a youth ticket (under 26) for the whole of europe for a month is £368, though this may change next year. Buy from http://shop.interrailer.com

4) In general yes, though on some trains (fast ones, overnight ones) you have to buy a reservation/suppliment. This needs a little bit of planning because sometime on busy routes they can sell out, but this is the exception rather than the rule. Most of the time, if youre willing to travel during the day and on slower trains you can go without any additional cost at all
Feel free to PM me with specific Interrailing Questions - especially regarding Eastern Europe or the UK!
